Key Points
- There is a broad spectrum of fillers available. The Juvéderm® Collection of Fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a gel substance already found in the body. Sculptra® stimulates the body to produce its own collagen.
- Lips and around the eyes are the most common areas of concern for patients that are addressed with advanced dermal fillers.
- It is important for patients to understand that fillers can be used to create the illusion of a lifted face, but they cannot lift facial features.
- Neuromodulators create a refreshed look while still maintaining motion and expression if they are only placed in the upper face and not injected over a wider area.
- Dr. Mark Clymer presents the results of both the non-surgical and surgical solutions so that the patient can make the decision that best achieves the desired look.
- Some practices charge by the unit, but Dr. Clymer’s practice charges by the area. Results can be dose-dependent, so spreading out the dose over a wider area of the face can reduce the longevity of the results.
- Around the eyes and close to the hairline can be more tender areas, but injections mostly feel like pinches. Fillers can cause more tenderness than other injections.
- Fillers in areas of motion tend to not last as long. Areas with less motion can last up to 12 months, depending on the location and type of filler.

- Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery that removes unwanted excess fat to improve body appearance and to smooth irregular body shapes. The procedure is also called body contouring.
- Over the years, the injected solution and fat removal method for liposuction have been refined since the procedure started being performed in 1974. Liposuction technologies used by Dr. Bond include; Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL®), Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL), and Laser Liposuction (SmartLipo®).
- An ideal candidate for liposuction is close to his or her goal weight and be healthy. Any skin folds will get smaller, but not disappear completely.

- Women tend to have liposuction after a C-section and men commonly have the procedure to address love handles.
- Having at least two inches of fat to remove when laying down can reduce skin irregularities.
- Non-invasive fat removal is an option for a candidate with a small amount of fat.
- Recovery can take a couple of days or up to a week.

Dr. Shah has two greater Chicago-area practices with his father, Rajendra Shah, MD, who is also a board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Samir Shah graduated college from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with a major in finance. He earned his medical degree at the Chicago Medical School. Thereafter, he trained in general surgery and subsequently completed a plastic surgery fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center. After plastic surgery training, he completed a one-year fellowship in hand surgery/microsurgery under the direction of world-renowned hand surgeon, Larry Hurst, M.D., at Stony Brook University, Long Island, NY. Dr. Samir Shah is site director for the aesthetic rotation at A New You Plastic Surgery & Laser Center and is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Key Points
- Pioneered by Brazilian surgeon Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, the Brazilian Butt Lift creates a slimmer waistline and enhances the buttocks.
- Despite its name, the procedure does not involve lifting the buttocks, but injecting it with purified fat from the abdomen and back extracted during liposuction.
- Dr. Samir Shah begins the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure by carefully sculpting the abdomen, back, and love handles with liposuction. Liposuction sets the stage for a fat transfer to augment the buttocks.
- The goal is to improve the disproportionate areas in the hip to buttock and to achieve an improved and enhanced-shaped posterior. Most patients who seek out this procedure aim for a balanced frame.
- The procedure can take up to 3.5 hours.
- Dr. Shah explains the evolution and safety measures taken by the American Society of Plastic Surgery. During their investigation in South Florida, they determined that the fatal complications following the procedure were due to intramuscular injection and fat embolism.
- Ultrasound-guided fat injection is a new method to prevent intramuscular injection.
- Implants and non-surgical collagen stimulation are alternative procedures to achieve the patient’s body shaping goals.
- The BBL involves recovery from both the liposuction and the buttock injection. Special pillows to aid sitting and relieve pressure can be used for two weeks until the fat is integrated. Sitting restrictions are lifted by six weeks post-operation.
- There can be fat attrition in the first three weeks, but the results will last as long as the patient maintains his or her body frame.

Facelift Facts – What You Need to Know | Season 2 Episode 3 – February 22, 2023 | Listen to podcast
Dr. Mark Clymer is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, nose, eyelids, head, and neck. Clymer Facial Plastic Surgery is located in Nashville, Tennessee where he delivers natural looking results. As the solo practitioner and president of Clymer Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Clymer can keep the direction of his private practice focused on excellence and patient care in a comfortable, supportive, and completely confidential environment. This commitment to quality patient care is exemplified by Dr. Clymer’s involvement as a member of the medical advisory board of a local surgery center. For over 20 years, his surgical skill, artistic vision combined with scientific methods, and his commitment to quality care for patients, have been the hallmarks of Clymer Facial Plastic Surgery’s success.
Key Points
- Dr. Clymer explains that a major concern of patients considering a facelift is that they want to look like a refreshed and younger version of themselves. They don’t want to look like they have had surgery. Patients want to look, “different better, not different other.”
- Dr. Clymer advises his patients that the key to a natural look lies in the details of the techniques used. There are no shortcuts to quality, and many times a “short cut” or simple procedure may lead to a more operated or unnatural look. A more thorough procedure, although one that may require some downtime, will give a much more natural result.
- A large percentage of Dr. Clymer’s practice includes addressing the concerns of patients who are not
happy with their neck. His manner of repair is to perform a facelift, which consists of lifting the
cheek and jowls which, in turn, lifts the neck. - Dr. Clymer has performed neck lifts on patients as young as 38 years old, and on patients up to 81 years old.
- Dr. Clymer encourages his patients to wait as long as possible before getting a facelift, so they get the most out of the surgery. He recommends not having the procedure too prematurely so that the patients receive the maximum results and maximum benefits, while still looking very natural.
- The recovery of a facelift varies from patient to patient; however, 2 weeks is the standard time.
- Dr. Clymer uses Arnica Montana (a natural herb) and the patients’ own platelet-rich plasma to reduce swelling and bruising.
- At the 2-week mark, Dr. Clymer’ aesthetician assists the patient, post operatively, with creating a makeup palette to cover up the residual bruising, which still needs time to heal.
- Dr. Clymer carefully strategizes where he places the incision so that it is hidden in the natural skin creases. The scar is barely noticeable once the patient completely heals.

Surgical Expertise & Art of Rhinoplasty | Season 2 Episode 1 – January 4, 2023 | Listen to podcast
Dr. Mark Clymer is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, nose, eyelids, and head and neck. Dr. Clymer is dedicated to delivering a natural look by utilizing his extensive knowledge, experience, artistic perception, and exceptional skill. Clymer Facial Plastic Surgery is located in Nashville, TN, and as the solo practitioner and president of his private practice, Dr. Clymer can keep it focused on excellence and patient care situated in a comfortable, supportive, and completely confidential environment. For over 20 years, his surgical skill, artistic vision combined with scientific methods, and his commitment to quality care for patients, have been the hallmarks of Clymer Facial Plastic Surgery’s success.
Key Points
- When finding a facial plastic surgeon, it is important to perform your due diligence, by asking questions to confirm the physician is the best choice for you. Some questions should include:
- How often does the physician perform the procedures you are interested in having done?
- Is the physician accustomed to performing difficult procedures?
- What credentials do they possess?
- Dr. Clymer states that rhinoplasty is an important part of facial surgery and when he is performing cosmetic or reconstructive surgery on the nose his goal is to create balance and harmony because the nose is the centerpiece of the face. An analogy he uses to explain this point is when you attend a wedding, the cake is the centerpiece of a well-decorated wedding table. When the centerpiece of the face is done correctly, rhinoplasty beautifies and enhances the face.
- To produce natural-looking results, a surgeon has to have an artistic eye to envision the beauty and then use their scientific hands with skills and techniques to produce the desired results.
- Dr. Clymer uses computer imaging and partners with his patients to ensure their outcome meets with their expectations.
- Dr. Clymer recommends patients having rhinoplasty in their 20s to 40s. However, he can, and will, perform the procedure on candidates above the age range, if the patient is a good candidate.

Hair Loss And Thinning Hair…What Can Be Done? | Season 1 Episode 6 – June 28, 2022 | Listen to podcast
Have you noticed that your daily hair loss is increasing? Are you concerned about your hair loss? Whether hair loss is a new concern or an ongoing condition, you are not alone. Hair loss (alopecia) is one of the most common concerns Dr. Rebecca Baxt, a board-certified dermatologist, diagnoses and treats at BAXT CosMedical®. Dr. Baxt offers specialized services for hair loss, including a revolutionary Hair Restoration Treatment called PRP, Platelet-Rich Plasma.
Key Points
- Normal hair loss is losing about 130 to 140 hairs a day.
- It is suggested collecting all the hairs that you lose in a given day (e.g., in your brush, comb, on your sweater or sweatshirt, in the car, on your pillowcase, shower drain). Stick all hairs into a baggie for seven days in a row. Count them. And divide by seven to get an average for the day over a one-week period of time. If you are over 150 – and even higher up in the 200s – that is an active hair loss situation.
- The most common type of hair loss reported by patients is due to heredity. Hair loss affects men and women. Many people are primarily familiar with male-pattern baldness, but it affects both sexes. The American Hair Loss Association says that by age 50, about 85% of men are balding.
- Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease where it can have a sudden onset and lose big clumps of hair.
- Most hair loss can be diagnosed by a clinical exam. However, if the clinical examination is unclear, then a scalp biopsy can be performed with local anesthesia and minimal stitches.
- It is important to note that there is a lot of “snake oil” being sold on the internet to treat hair loss. So, it is important not to waste much time and money. Instead, please consult with a board-certified dermatologist.

Season 1 Episode 2 | March 9, 2022 | Listen to podcast
Join narrator Chijioke Williams as we continue our deep dive into the history and controversy surrounding lipstick in the beauty world. During the early 1900s, women in the US enjoyed the freedom to use cosmetics with relative impunity. Then, as the last era of the temperance movement took hold, a national debate of whether respectable women could wear lipstick fired up, with social and political implications. After the passing of the 19th Amendment, a battle between the prohibitionists of strict moral code and a new breed of modern, emancipated women known as Flappers began. Read more.

Her parents hired a lawyer to argue in court that the school board had violated their daughter’s civil rights.
- Pearl was nicknamed the Lipstick War Heroine by a movie company in LA and offered $1,000 per week in 1921.
- In the early 1930’s the lipstick war wasn’t confined to the United States as the movement was growing in Britain and even Germany.
- As women went to work in factories, Elizabeth Arden cosmetics were commissioned to create a kit for the American Marine Corps Women’s Reserve to boost morale. The kit included red lipstick.
